The Department has a strong faculty base with varied expertise and training in terms of their Doctoral and Post Doctoral work experience from the premier Institutions and Universities of the country i.e. IIT Roorkee, Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, Allahabad University, Thappar University, Patiala, GBPUA&T, Pantnagar etc. The faculty keeps on enriching themselves by getting exposure at different workshops, conferences and refresher courses at institutions of repute of repute in the country.

Dr. Nidhi S. Belwal, M.Sc. (Biotechnology), Ph.D. (Biotechnology)

Associate Professor & Incharge (Department of Microbiology)

Doctorate in Biotechnology from H. N. B. Garhwal Central University, Dr. Nidhi has 15 years of teaching and research experience. She has received the fellowship while working on the mass propagation of endangered medicinal plants of Uttarakhand funded by the Uttarakhand State Council of Science & Technology (UCOST). Her active research area is in the field of bioremediation of various types of pollutants, Plant Tissue Culture, Antimicrobial Activity of Crude Extracts of Some Medicinal Plants and Plant-Microbe Interaction. She has guided more than 50 Master’s Dissertations in different arena of Life Sciences & guiding Ph.D. students. She has organized various National & International Conferences as Organizing Secretary & Convener. She has 20 publications and book chapters in journals & books of National & International repute and Genbank & Germplasm submissions. She attended and presented in more than 30 International and National Conferences. She has been awarded with Appreciation Award for ‘Exemplary Performance’ by the University itself. On International Women’s Day 2023, she was also awarded with Appreciation Award for contributing in the field of teaching & education by the Human Rights & Social Justice Association. She is also the recipient of prestigious ‘Best Teachers Award’ by Women Leaders Forum & Icons of Asia, 2023. Dr. Belwal as Principal Investigator has one ongoing collaborative research project with USERC, Dehradun.

Dr. Santosh Kumar Karn, M.Sc. (Biotechnology), Ph.D. (Biotechnology)

Dr. S. K. Karn received an M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree in Biotechnology at Thapar University, Patiala, and completed Post-doctorate at the Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing, China. Dr. Karn has about 15 years of teaching and research experience. Dr. Karn has been awarded DBT-JRF (2005), International Young Scientist Award (2011) and Visiting Researcher Award (2013) through the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and the National Natural Science Foundation (NFSC) of China. In the year (2016) he was awarded for Distinguish Scientist by Presidential International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI initiative) by CAS Beijing, China. Recently he also recognised as the top 1% peer reviewer in Microbiology and editorial pursuit internationally by Clarivate Analytics, USA. Dr. Karn has published more than 95 research papers and 3 edited books in leading International Journals and publishers. He attended and presented more than 45 International and National Conferences and deposited more than 100 different gene sequences to GeneBank-NCBI and also submitted 15 industrially important microorganisms to National Collection of Industrial Microorganisms (NCIM, NCL, Pune, India) and 5 at China General Microbiology Culture Collection Centre (CGMCC, Beijing, China). Dr. Karn successfully investigated 3 different research projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation (NFSC) of China. Dr. Karn understands teaching is one of the greatest challenges and most rewarding aspects. He ventures to inspire students with his enthusiasm for the subjects, cultivate critical-thinking and decision-making for innovative approaches. He taught various courses and guided M. Tech, B. Tech (Biotechnology), M.Sc. and PhD students for their research work. Currently Dr. Karn has two research projects in running one from Xcel Life Science California, USA and other from USERC, Dehradun, Govt. of Uttarakhand. Dr. Karn has broad research interest in Biofilm Engineering; Environmental Genomics and Proteomics; Enzyme and Energy; Bioremediation; Extremophiles and related area.

Dr. Nikki Nautiyal, M.Sc. (Biotechnology), Ph.D. (Genetics & Plant Breeding)

Dr. Niki has done her M.Sc. in Biotechnology and Ph.D in Genetics and Plant breeding from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar (Uttarakhand). She has more than 8 years of teaching and research experience. Qualified ICAR NET conducted by Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board in the year 2014. She was recipient of University scholarship during her Doctorate Program. She has supervised 18 Post-graduate/Graduate theses. Her publications include 10 Research Papers, 8 popular articles in National and International Journals of repute, 5 book chapters published with Springer Nature/Taylor & Francis and has authored 1 book and 1 Edited book. Dr. Niki has been awarded the prestigious “Shikshak Shiromani Award” in year 2023 and “Young Women Scientist Achievement Award” by Uttarakhand Science Education & Research Centre (USERC), Department of Science & Technology, Government of Uttarakhand in 2023 in Women Scientist Conclave 2023-2024. Her area of specialization is related to Plant breeding and Plant biotechnology.

Dr. Deepanshu Rana, M.Sc. & Ph.D. in Microbiology

He has done his M.Sc. & Ph.D. in Microbiology from Gurukul Kangri (Deemed to be University), Hardwar, Uttarakhand, India. He is having 5 years of Research and 3 years of teaching experience. He was a recipient of the Young Scientist Award from SAAR, JNU (February, 2020). He is an active member of Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) and Indian Science Congress Association-Haridwar Chapter. Dr. Rana has research interest in Gut Bacteria, Plant Metabolites, Secondary Metabolites, Microbe-Microbe Interaction, Antimicrobial agents, Ecological Niche, Nanotechnology, In-silico Study. Apart from proficiency in various Microbiological and Nanotechnological techniques he has also expertise in various software skills like RSM, BLAST, STATIXL, MEGA-X, Design expert, ADME, NEB Cutter, PyRx, ANI Calculator and other web based bioinformatics tools. 10 gene sequences have been submitted in his names in NCBI Database, USA. He has presented a total of 11 research articles in different national and international conferences. He has published a total of 09 research articles, 03 review articles and 05 book chapters. He has published 2 patents and serving as Co-Investigator in a USERC Funded Project.

Dr. Rakesh Matura M.Sc. (Biotechnology), Ph.D. (Biotechnology)

Dr Rakesh Matura has done his MSc in Biotechnology from HNB Garhwal University Srinagar Garhwal and PhD in Biotechnology from Kumaon University Nainital/Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal Nainital. He has vast research experience of working in 6 research projects funded by various National funding agencies and institute such as DBT, Govt. of India; NAIP, ICAR and Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI). He has more than 12 years of teaching and research experience among which 4 years of post-PhD experience as Research Associate at Project Directorate on Foot and Mouth Disease, Mukteswar (IVRI) and Wildlife Institute of India Dehradun. He has submitted 195 Nucleotide DNA sequence in Genebank NCBI. He has published more than 20 research paper in National and international journal and has participated in many national/international Conferences, workshop, training programs and seminar. His areas of research interest include microsatellite marker development, population genetic studies and development of recombinant protein-based ELISA assays.  

Ms. Garima Singh, M. Sc. (Zoology), M. Phil. (Avian-Chronobiology), Ph. D. (Ornithology-Avian acoustics)

Ms. Garima Singh completed her M. Phil. in 2017, specialization with chronobiology entitled “Circadian rhythm in passerine finches’’ to study the locomotory behaviour in terms of migration in different photoperiod of Emberiza bruniceps, Lunchura malacca malacca, Ploceous philippines. Her area of expertise in her Ph. D. is Ornithology, Chronobiology, Zoo semiotics, Ethology, Avian-Acoustics and Behavioural Ecology. She has 10 Research Articles, 04 book chapter with reputed publishers. She has worked as JRF in Drug Standardization Research Institute, Ministry of AYUSH, New Delhi (20 8-2019). She completed a SERB funded project from Zoological Survey of India, Dehradun entitled “Microstructure, individual and sub-species variation in Indian Robin (Cosychus fulicatus L.) in association of Ph. D. (Since 2019). She has also experienced of collection of acoustical evidences with territorial aspects of 04 sub-species of Indian robin from Himalayan foothills (Northern population), Tamilnadu (Southern population), West Bengal (Eastern population), Maharashtra (Central population) and also hands on training of Animal Handling and Dosing in Pathology Laboratory, LLRM Medical College Campus, Meerut. Her learned skillis in Avisoft SAS-Lab Pro, Q- GIS, Raven-Pro, SPSS 16.0, Google-Earth Pro. She has delivered 09 invited/oral talks and awarded Best Oral Presentation and attended several International conference and training programs, one of them is “Regional training on Lab-based quality control for Traditional/ Herbal products for the WHO South East Asia Region organized by WHO SEARO, Pharmacopeia Commission, Gov. of India. She is life member of “Ethological society of India” and “Association of Avian biologist in India”.

Dr. Supriya Vaish, M.Sc & Ph.D. in Microbiology

Ph.D. in Microbiology (Biodynamic farming) from Integral University, Lucknow and has eight years of research experience as JRF and SRF in CSIR and ICAR labs. Qualified ICAR-NET in Agricultural microbiology has published 18 research papers and 21 research abstract in reputed national and international journals and conferences, respectively. She has deposited 3 gene sequences at GeneBank-NCBI

Dr. Madhulika Esther Prasad M.Sc. (Biology),Ph.D. (Biotechnology)

Dr. Madhulika Esther Prasad did her Ph.D. in Biotechnology from Graphic Era deemed to be University, Dehradun, with a Canadian research work experience of six years prior to Ph.D. Her Ph.D. was entitled as “Characterization of Nutritional & Genetic Diversity in Millets of Uttarakhand”, and she received a DST Women Scientist-A position with a research grant of 23 Lakhs from the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, as Principal Investigator (PI). She was one of the five scientists in the state of Uttarakhand who received this grant in the year of 2018-19. She completed her Research-based Masters from Dalhousie University, Canada, with a prestigious NSERC fellowship. Her Ph.D. and DST research include work on the internationally acclaimed millet grain. She has characterized the biodiversity of millets growing in the high-altitude regions of Uttarakhand to identify cultivars with higher levels of protein, fat, minerals and amylose, the latter being extremely beneficial to patients suffering from type 2 diabetes, which is of high importance. This research has also won her two awards as Best Woman Researcher (2021), and Young Researcher (2020) in national and international conferences. Her previous research work has also identified the role of XBAT32, a novel E3 ligase, in the ethylene biosynthesis pathway in Arabidopsis thaliana. Likewise, her work in E.Coli identified the essential role of a novel C-terminal region in the CesT chaperone protein for bacterial toxin secretion. Part of her work is published in high-impact journals such as Plant Physiology (Impact factor-6.8), Journal of Bacteriology (Impact factor-5.4) and Plant Signalling & Behaviour (Impact factor-2.2). She has published more than 15 research papers, and presented talks at international conferences,

Dr. Kartik Uniyal M.Sc. (Biotechnology), Ph.D. (Forest Biotechnology)

Dr. Kartik Uniyal is working as Assistant Professor in Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology. He has obtained his Masters in Biotechnology from Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University Campus, Srinagar Garhwal and Doctor of Philosophy in Forest Biotechnology from Forest Research Institute, Deemed to be University, Dehradun. He has worked in Indian Council of Forestry research and Education funded project as JRF. He has more than 8 years of teaching and research experience. His publications include 10 Research papers and articles in National and International Journals of repute and 2 book chapters published with one in Springer Nature. He has authored a book, Essential of Genetics, for Undergraduate students. He has participated and presented papers in about 20 conferences/seminars/workshops. He has been awarded ESDA Young Scientist Award in 2022 for contribution in field of Forest biotechnology at 3rd World Environment Summit, V.P. Chest Institute, University of Delhi (North Campus). His area of interest/specialization is Forest biotechnology, Forest pathology/ microbiology.
