Overview: Basic science, encompassing Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Mathematics, forms the cornerstone of scientific understanding. The School of Applied Chemistry and Basic Sciences at SBSU is dedicated to fostering knowledge and discovery in these fundamental disciplines. With a focus on awareness and proficiency in basic sciences, the school offers a range of programs, including MSc. Chemistry with specializations, BSc Honours programs in Chemistry, and Bachelor of Science with CBZ & PCM.
School of Applied Chemistry and Basic Sciences offers courses
Within the School of Applied Chemistry and Basic Sciences there are five departments:
B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry is an under-graduate chemistry course that lasts for the span of 3 years. Chemistry is the science of the composition, Structure, properties, and reaction of materials, namely atomic and molecular system. During B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry program, it is taken up by the study of various theories of chemistry and its branches. Applicants should have analytical and problem – solving mind, examining and interpreting results and making evaluations based on limited information are most suitable for it.
Basic Sciences is the mother of all branches of science. The need for general education in Basic Sciences acts as a cornerstone in achieving scientific literacy, essential in our nation's march towards progress and development. The Department of Basic Sciences came into existence in 2016 when two courses B.Sc.(CBZ) & B.Sc (PCM) were started. Two batches of B.Sc. PCM & CBZ have passed out succesfully from the Institute. The department is enriched with world class laboratory facilities in Chemistry, Physics, Botany and Zoology. Some basic apparatus like Soxhelet & Kjeldal's Assembly, Air Oven, Muffle Furnace etc. and sophisticated equipments like UV-visible spectrophotometer, Flame photometer, Potentiometer, Conductivity meter, Dissolution & Disintegration apparatus, Hardness tester, Friability apparatus etc. Physics: Equipments such as Newton's ring, Spectrometer, Plank's constant set-up, Balastic Galvanometer, Hall effect, Lee's effect, Keter's pendulum, Half & Full wave rectifier's etc.

This course is designed well to train the students to work as professionals in Pharmaceutical, Nutraceutical ,Cosmoceutical, Chemical & Herbal Drug Industries . The comprehensive syllabus for this two year PG course include Chemistry of Natural Products, Basic Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Stereochemistry and Reaction mechanisms, Quantitative analytical methods, Drug design, Drug delivery systems, Bio-pharmaceutics, Chemotherapeutic agents, Pharmacodynamic gents, Applications of Computer and Biostatistics and Modern Analytical methods. Apart from the above theoretical aspects, great emphasis is given on practicals so that students are well versed with various techniques / instruments used in various R&D units of Industry, advanced research & higher studies
Students are trained in theory and practical in fundamentals of chemistry so that they possess good theoretical & practical background of various concepts such as organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical and bioanalysis etc. The syllabus has four theory and two laboratory courses in each semester Course makes students to learn basic organic, inorganic, physical chemistry and basic analytical techniques in the first year with specializations in organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry in second year . Basic techniques involved in synthesis of drugs, purification and spectral analysis are also taught so that research and development in the field of medicines also becomes area for their absorption in various R&D organizations and industries. Thorough knowledge of bio-organic molecules is also imparted to the students leading them to show their expertise in development of plant based drugs. Also a complete knowledge in the field of metal extraction and processing is covered so as to get them absorbed in metallurgical and mineral industries. Thorough knowledge is given in the field of spectroscopy so as to make students well aware with analytical techniques required for the industries and make their absorption as quality control /quality assurance chemist in various industries.
